Cape Hatteras Lighthouse in North Carolina has often been called the Graveyard of the Atlanic because of the rough waters
surrounding it. It was opened in 1803 and has a tower of 90 feet.
Theodosa Burr Alston walks the beach near the light on hazy, dreary days. She sailed on a ship called the Patriot with
a portrait of herself as a welcome home gift for her father. The ship was taken over by pirates and she somehow escaped with
the portrait. Dr. William G. Poole took her in and nursed her until she one night ran off with the portrait. It was later
found on the beach but no body was ever recovered. Dr. Poole's family donated the portrait to the MacBeth Art Gallery in New
York after his death.
Maybe some dreary night when you're walkin the beaches of North Carolina you'll come across Theodosa looking for her
long lost portrait.
